Samsung found itself atop the list, having Android Sentral Berita shipped 74.3 million smartphones during Q2 2014. This week, IDC is providing figures outlining how smartphone operating systems are fairing in the global market. Not surprisingly, smartphones running Android and iOS are doing quite well in the market. Over 255 million smartphones were shipped in Q2 2014 running Android OS, equating to a whopping 84.7 percent of the market.

We’ve heard (and so have others like Kara Swisher of Re/code ) Samsung will pay about $200 million to buy SmartThings. SmartThings will continue to run independently, but it’s relocating from Washington, D.C. to Palo Alto, Calif. to be near Samsung’s Open Innovation Center, where Samsung incubates startups and researches new technologies. In an interview with Business Insider in June , SmartThings CEO Alex Hawkinson said he wouldn’t want to sell SmartThings to a tech giant unless he had a guarantee he could remain independent and expand the platform to other devices, no matter who the manufacturer is.

HTC One E8 to arrive on Sprint

Droid Life points out that, as promised, Google hasis preparing to ship out free Moto 360s to everyone who attended this summers Google I/O conference. FROM EARLIER: Motorola to unveil Moto 360 smartwatch ahead of Apples iWatch I/O attendees now have between now and September 5th to give the Google I/O team their shipping addresses so they can claim their watches. Google says that the faster you send them your shipping address, the faster youll get your watch. We expect Motorola to formally take the wraps off the Moto 360 during its big event on September 4th, when it will also likely unveil its next-generation Moto X and Moto G smartphones as well. The Moto 360 has earned early acclaim for its gorgeous design thats highlighted by its round face and metallic body.

The company rolled out the solid mid-range Desire 816 phablet in the US last week, while the Desire 610 landed in the country during July. The next handset finding its way to American shores will be the HTC One M8 variant, the One E8. Of course, the M8 flagship has been available in the country since launch, as have other smartphone, but HTC is padding out its range nicely. Like the two Desire smartphones that have landed in the US recently, the HTC One E8 will arrive as a carrier exclusive, at least initially. The Desire 610 launched with GoPhone, while the Desire 816 arrived on Virgin Mobile and after it sent out a video today we know that the One E8 will land on the nation’s third largest carrier, Sprint. The company has yet to make an official announcement, but that should come in the next few days. If you are unfamiliar with the HTC One E8, it is a high end smartphone that takes plenty of inspiration from the flagship One M8 but does away with that handsets all metal body in favour of a plastic.
